About the event
"The Great Debaters" is a 2007 American historical drama film following the trials and tribulations of the debate team of Wiley College, a historically black college. Based on a true story set in 1935 Texas during the era of Jim Crow laws that haunted African Americans in the American South, this film explores the racial social issues of the Great Depression and the importance of critical thinking, education, and mentorship.
