Pretend you’ve been recruited as a member of the Culper Spy Ring, and you need to know how to decipher a message written in invisible ink. Supplies include a paint brush, water, drying cloth, vitriol (diluted sulfuric acid), Thomas Jefferson cipher and “furnace box.” Read the clues to find the coin with a hidden message, reveal the message using the brush and vitriol, then use the cipher to decode the message. Knowing the West

May 2–August 9, 2026 East Building, Level B, Meymandi Exhibition Gallery Knowing the West embraces and reexamines perceptions of the American West to create more inclusive and complex dialogues. The exhibition reflects the diverse perspectives that have contributed to art and life in the region. Presenting Native American works together with art by non-Native makers, it reveals how the stories we tell and the visual language we employ influence understanding of our nation’s history and cultures.
